Top Red Sox News

  • Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: Back in action Tuesday

Narvaez (finger) will start at catcher and bat seventh in Tuesday's game against the Royals.

Narvaez was pulled from Sunday's game versus Atlanta with right middle finger soreness and did not play Monday. However, he is feeling well enough to give it a go Tuesday as the Red Sox look to clinch the series win.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Returns to lineup Tuesday

Rafaela (hamstring) will start in center field and bat second in Tuesday's game versus the Royals.

Rafaela didn't start Monday's series opener because of some mild hamstring tightness, but he entered that game as a defensive replacement and has returned to the lineup Tuesday. The Gold Glove center fielder has a .918 OPS in May.

  • Red Sox's Andruw Monasterio: Makes fourth straight start

Monasterio started at shortstop and went 2-for-4 in Monday's 3-1 win over Kansas City.

Monasterio made a fourth consecutive start at shortstop as a fill-in for Trevor Story (groin), who could be facing surgery. The Red Sox have a few options to deploy at shortstop, but thus far interim manager Chad Tracy has only used Monasterio. He's slashing .256/.301/.397 with eight doubles, one home run, nine RBI and eight runs scored over 83 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Mickey Gasper: Logs two hits in win

Gasper started at designated hitter and went 2-for-5 with a run scored in Monday's 3-1 win over the Royals.

Gasper logged his third multi-hit effort in seven starts since a callup from Triple-A Worcester. Most of the switch-hitter's starts have come as the DH, as Roman Anthony's wrist injury has opened up opportunities for both Gasper and Masataka Yoshida. With news that the Red Sox paused Anthony's rehab after he experienced lingering pain while attempting to swing a bat Monday, Gasper could be a regular presence for the immediate future. It helps that he's hit so well, too, going 10-for-30 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored over eight contests.

  • Red Sox's Willson Contreras: Homers again in win Monday

Contreras went 1-for-4 with a two-run homer in Monday's 3-1 win over the Royals.

Contreras got the scoring started in this one, depositing a sinker from Seth Lugo over the fence for a two-run shot in the sixth inning. It was Contreras' second homer in the last three games and his 10th of the season. He's leading the team with an .841 OPS and now has 10 long balls, 27 RBI, 21 runs scored, one stolen base and a 20:51 BB:K across 189 plate appearances. Contreras is in the 91st percentile or better in xwOBA, xSLG, barrel rate and bat speed.

  • Red Sox's Aroldis Chapman: Lowers ERA to 0.54 with 11th save

Chapman recorded the save in Monday's 3-1 win over the Royals, striking out one with no walks in a hitless and scoreless ninth inning.

Chapman set down Starling Marte, Jac Caglianone and Isaac Collins in order on 14 pitches to pick up his 11th save of the season. The left-hander hasn't allowed a run since April 4 and extended his scoreless streak to 12.2 innings. On the season, he owns a microscopic 0.54 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 22:7 K:BB across 16.2 innings. Opponents are batting just .125 against Chapman with a 34.4 percent strikeout rate.

  • Red Sox's Sonny Gray: Records season-high nine strikeouts

Gray (5-1) earned the win Monday against the Royals, allowing one run on five hits and one walk with nine strikeouts across six innings.

Gray picked up his third straight win in his third start since returning from a short stint on the injured list with a strained right hamstring. He's been limited to 80 pitches or fewer in all three outings, but Gray has been extremely efficient, surrendering just two runs on 11 hits and four walks across 17 innings during that span. He generated season highs in whiffs (12) and strikeouts (nine) against the Royals on Monday and now owns a 2.93 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 30:9 K:BB across 40 innings. The right-hander's next scheduled start is slated to come Sunday at home against the Twins.

  • Red Sox's Mickey Gasper: Seeing steady reps since call-up

Gasper will start at designated hitter and bat second in Monday's game against the Royals.

After not playing in either of the Red Sox's first two games following his May 7 call-up from Triple-A Worcester, Gasper has proceeded to start in seven of the team's subsequent eight contests. He's largely been the beneficiary of other players missing time with injuries, but Gasper has capitalized on his opportunities thus far, slashing .320/.346/.400 since his promotion. Gasper could return to the bench Tuesday if either or both of Carlos Narvaez (finger) and Ceddanne Rafaela (hamstring) are cleared to start.

  • Red Sox's Caleb Durbin: Sitting for second straight day

Durbin is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals.

Nick Sogard will get the nod at third base for Durbin for the second day in a row, perhaps hinting that the latter is on shaky ground atop the depth chart. After posting a .721 OPS as a rookie with Milwaukee in 2025, Durbin has struggled mightily at the dish during his first season in Boston, slashing just .165/.247/.245 with a 15.5 percent strikeout rate -- up 5.6 percentage points from his 2025 regular season -- over 155 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Ceddanne Rafaela: Out Monday with tight hammy

Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said that Rafaela is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals due to "a little bit of tightness in his hamstring," Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Rafaela is experiencing some discomfort in his leg after a busy weekend in Atlanta both on the bases and in the outfield, but the Red Sox aren't concerned about their everyday center fielder requiring a stint on the injured list. Tracy said that Rafaela will receive treatment Monday, and the expectation is that the 25-year-old will be back in the lineup Tuesday. Jarren Duran will slide over from his usual spot in left field to cover center field in the series opener in Kansas City.

  • Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: Not starting in series opener

Narvaez (finger) is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Royals.

Narvaez will get at least one game off after he exited in the sixth inning of Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta due to right middle finger discomfort. X-rays on Narvaez's finger came back negative, so the Red Sox are viewing him as day-to-day for the time being. Connor Wong will get the nod behind the dish in Monday's series opener against the Royals.

  • Red Sox's Connor Wong: Checking back into starting nine

Wong (ankle) will start at catcher and bat eighth in Monday's game against the Royals.

Carlos Narvaez (finger) is on the bench for the series opener after exiting Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta, but Wong is feeling well enough to make his first start since Wednesday following a recent bout with a right ankle injury. Wong came off the bench to replace Narvaez in Sunday's contest, going 1-for-2 with a run scored.

  • Red Sox's Roman Anthony: Still sore when swinging bat

Anthony (wrist) was still sore when taking some swings Monday and will not swing a bat again until at least Friday, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

The Red Sox had been hopeful that Anthony could take a big step forward with the resumption of a hitting progression Monday, but instead the team is forced to pump the brakes on his rehab. Until Anthony is able to ramp up his swinging without issue, there will not be a timetable for his return to action. He's been sidelined since early May.

  • Red Sox's Andruw Monasterio: Slides in at shortstop

Monasterio started at shortstop and went 1-for-4 in Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta.

Monasterio has made two consecutive starts at shortstop, as Trevor Story (groin) was added to the injured list and could face surgery. It's unclear if Monasterio will become the everyday fill-in at shortstop, but interim manager Chad Tracy put him in the starting lineup against right-handers Saturday and Sunday. Other than Monasterio, the Red Sox have a host of options on the 26-man roster that can play shortstop, including Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Nick Sogard and Marcelo Mayer.

  • Red Sox's Brayan Bello: Jumped early in loss

Bello (2-5) took the loss against Atlanta on Sunday, allowing seven runs on eight hits and three walks with one strikeout over five innings.

Bello allowed runs in four of his five innings pitched, including five across the game's first two frames. He generated just seven swinging strikes on 98 pitches and yielded 11 hard-hit balls in his first start since April 29 after two impressive performances in bulk relief to open May. The 27-year-old now owns an unsightly 7.16 ERA, 1.80 WHIP and 30:20 K:BB across 44 innings this season and lines up for a home matchup against the Twins next weekend, though it's currently unclear in what role that will be.

  • Red Sox's Carlos Narvaez: X-rays negative on finger

Narvaez underwent X-rays on his finger, which came back negative, after Sunday's 8-1 loss to Atlanta, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.

Narvaez exited the game in the third inning after dealing with finger pain on his right hand, and he is now considered day-to-day. The 27-year-old was replaced in the contest by Connor Wong, who is likely the next man up behind the plate if Narvaez is forced to miss any action moving forward.
