Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Resumes throwing
Manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Stroman (knee) has begun playing catch, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports.
Stroman received a cortisone shot over the weekend to address the inflammation in his left knee, and Friday appears to be the first time he's done any sort of throwing since he landed on the injured list Saturday. There's still no telling how much time the 33-year-old will need for a full recovery, though the Yankees may not be in much of a hurry to bring him back after he began the year with an 11.57 ERA and 2.04 WHIP across 9.1 innings over his first three starts.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Gets injection for knee
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Stroman received a cortisone shot over the weekend to address inflammation in his left knee, Larry Fleisher of the Associated Press reports. "The MRI was good, but he had some swelling in there somewhere," Boone said of Stroman. "So try to eliminate that, hopefully get him ramped up pretty quick and, hopefully, something that really helps him move it forward."
New York placed Stroman on the 15-day injured list Saturday after he failed to escape the first inning and was limited to 46 pitches a day earlier in a rain-affected start against the Giants. Boone noted that he was unsure if the poor weather exacerbated the discomfort in Stroman's left knee, which he previously had surgically repaired in 2015. Though the MRI confirmed that Stroman isn't dealing with any structural damage to his knee, the right-hander could still require more than the minimum 15 days to fully heal up from the injury. Stroman had struggled to an 11.57 ERA, 2.04 WHIP and 7:7 K:BB in 9.1 innings over his three starts, so the Yankees likely won't look to rush him back from the IL until they're confident that he's 100 percent healthy.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Placed on injured list
The Yankees placed Stroman on the 15-day injured list Saturday with left knee inflammation.
Stroman said his knee was bothering him during his start against San Francisco on Friday, during which he gave up five earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning. He'll now officially miss a few starts to allow his knee to fully recover, though it's unclear if he's facing more than a minimum-length stay. In the meantime, Allan Winans will come up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fill the open roster spot.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Gets X-rays on knee
Stroman reported problems with his left knee after leaving his start Friday against the Giants, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Stroman's knee injury may help explain his ugly performance Friday, as he was chased out of the game after giving up five earned runs on four hits and three walks in just two-thirds of an inning. He received X-rays shortly after his removal, and more will be known regarding his immediate availability once the results come back.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Allows four in no-decision
Stroman did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 10-4 win over the Pirates, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over four innings.
Stroman was pulled after a rough fourth inning, during which he walked three batters and gave up four runs. He generated only five whiffs on 74 pitches and didn't stick around long enough to benefit from a six-run outburst by the Yankees in the fifth frame. The 33-year-old owns a 7.27 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 6:4 K:BB across 8.2 innings and lines up to face the Giants next weekend.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Falls short of win
Stroman didn't factor in the decision Sunday against Milwaukee after allowing three runs on five hits and a walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.
The New York offense delivered double-digit runs for the second straight game, but Stroman was unable to stick around long enough to qualify for the victory. Still, it was a decent season debut for the right-hander, with most of the damage against him coming via a two-run homer from Jake Bauers. A road matchup with the Pirates likely waits for Stroman next weekend.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Posts strong start Wednesday
Stroman tossed three scoreless innings in a Grapefruit League game against Philadelphia on Wednesday, allowing one hit and issuing one walk while striking out three batters.
The only hit Stroman allowed was an infield single, though he did display a bit of wildness by walking two batters and plunking another. That led to him needing 64 pitches to get through three frames, but the overall results were mostly positive as the veteran righty prevented the Phillies from crossing the plate. Stroman struggled early this spring, but he's since bounced back and has a tolerable 4.66 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 7:2 K:BB over 9.2 spring innings. He's a leading candidate to open the season in the Yankees' rotation, due in part to long-term injuries to Gerrit Cole (elbow) and Luis Gil (lat).

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Likely to begin season in rotation
With Luis Gil (lat) set to miss extended time at the beginning of the campaign, Stroman is likely to be part of the Yankees' season-opening rotation, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Gil isn't expected to be able to resume throwing for at least six weeks, which means that he isn't likely to be able to enter New York's rotation until sometime in June, at the earliest. As a result, Stroman, who has 252 career regular-season starts in 261 total outings to his name, is the logical choice to fill Gil's starting spot. Stroman posted a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP across 154.2 regular-season innings covering 30 appearances last year, and he may have to pitch well early on to keep his rotation role. Among the pitchers who could push Stroman is rookie Will Warren, who struggled in a six-outing cup of coffee in the majors last season but has looked great in spring training so far, allowing just one run while registering an 11:2 K:BB over eight frames.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Shelled in second spring outing
Stroman allowed four runs on four hits while striking out one batter over 2.2 innings in a Grapefruit League game against Atlanta on Sunday.
Stroman gave up solo homers to Austin Riley and Matt Olson in the first inning and exited with two outs in the third after giving up a pair of doubles in the frame. The veteran hurler has been adamant about wanting to be in the rotation rather than coming out of the bullpen this season, and there may be a starting spot available with Luis Gil's Opening Day status in question due to a shoulder injury. However, Stroman hasn't made much of a case for such a role this spring, as he's posted a 9.82 ERA and 1.64 WHIP through 3.2 frames covering two appearances.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Not starting Tuesday anymore
Stroman, who had been scheduled to start Tuesday against the Twins in Fort Myers, will stay back in Tampa to pitch live batting practice instead, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
Stroman logged a scoreless inning with two hits allowed and one strikeout in his first start of the spring last week. If Clarke Schmidt is able to put his back issue in the rearview mirror, Stroman will likely open the year in a long-relief role, although he has been vocal this spring about wanting to start.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Draws start for exhibition opener
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Stroman will start Friday's Grapefruit League opener versus the Rays, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports.
Just under a week after he made a delayed arrival to spring training and told reporters that he had no intention of pitching out of the bullpen in 2025, Stroman will end up getting the starting nod for the Yankees' exhibition opener. Stroman looks like he'll remain on a starter's throwing schedule throughout the spring, but unless he's traded, he likely won't have a path to a rotation spot unless at least one of Gerrit Cole, Max Fried, Luis Gil, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt isn't available to begin the season. Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Boone said Wednesday that Schmidt is dealing with a "cranky back," but the injury doesn't yet appear to be anything that will jeopardize Schmidt's availability for Opening Day.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Says he won't pitch in bullpen
Stroman reported to Yankees camp Friday and told reporters "I won't pitch out of the bullpen," Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
While Stroman did not report with other pitchers and catchers earlier this week, he technically didn't have to report until Feb. 22, per the terms of MLB's Collective Bargaining Agreement. As far as Stroman's role goes, while he insisted that "I'm a starter," there wouldn't currently appear to be any room for him in the Yankees' rotation. That can change, of course, with an injury or a trade. Stroman held a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 154.2 regular-season innings in 2024, which covered 29 starts and one relief appearance.

Yankees' Marcus Stroman: Yet to report to camp
Stroman has yet to report to spring training as of Thursday, and the Yankees haven't yet determined when he might be ready to participate in workouts, Erik Boland of Newsday reports.
According to the terms of MLB's collective bargaining agreement, Stroman isn't required to take the field for spring training until Feb. 22, but his voluntary absence is noteworthy with all other pitchers and catchers having reported to camp. Stroman was still present in Tampa on Tuesday to take his pre-camp physical, and he's expected to continue working out on his own over the next few days before joining the Yankees. The 33-year-old's decision not to report to camp comes while his role entering the 2025 season is uncertain, after the Yankees signed Max Fried to an eight-year deal over the winter to give the team a projected five-man rotation that also includes Gerrit Cole, Carlos Rodon, Clarke Schmidt and Luis Gil. Unless the Yankees head into Opening Day with a six-man rotation or lose one of the other five pitchers to an injury, Stroman could find himself in the bullpen after he turned in a 4.31 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 154.2 regular-season innings during his first season with New York in 2024.
